Tips On Investing In An Effective Modeling Portfolio
1. There is no way around the requirement of having an effective, professional modeling portfolio. Regardless of what you do to establish, or work, your modeling career, there is one constant. You HAVE to have a modeling portfolio in order to market your looks, and in order to get modeling jobs. A modeling portfolio is an investment into your career as a model, and you will only get our of your career what you put into it. Whether you find and book modeling jobs on your own as an independent model, or you go through modeling agencies to obtain modeling work (and smart models do both), you have to have a professional modeling portfolio. You will need to find a professional photographer or a photography company for that portfolio too, and one which specializes specifically in modeling portfolios. Wedding photographers, amateur photographers (especially the ones working off of freebie web site profiles and who have not invested in their careers), cheap photographers, portrait photographers, and other photographers will not be able to give you what you need. Neither will a modeling agency, since they are not in the modeling portfolio business. Modeling and talent agencies are only in business to work for models, and to find them work. In Florida, it is against the law for agencies to sell models ANYTHING, or to make money referring models to photographers. It is also unethical, and unprofessional.
2. Invest in the best value in modeling portfolio photography and composite cards, not the lowest priced. You get what you pay for. Modeling is a business. Models are sole proprietor businesses, and need effective careers tools for them to be able to get work. If you invest in a cheap portfolio or have a friend take pictures for your modeling portfolio, you are not going to be able to compete against professional models, models who have invested in effective portfolio. You will not be able to get work in the modeling industry, regardless of how hard you work, if you push ineffective, cheap, tacky tools.
3. Invest in your modeling
portfolio before going to any modeling agency. Modeling and talent agencies
are only in business to find work for models, and are not in the modeling portfolio
business. They will not be able to advise you like a professional photographer,
a photographer who specializes in modeling portfolio photography, can. Go to
the professional source for what you need, and then go to the modeling agencies
after you have your portfolio and the other career tools that you will need.
Not only do you have a choice on getting the portfolio that you will need, but
it is the only way to guarantee that the agency will work for you, like they
are supposed to, and not make money by selling you a portfolio, and then have
no incentive to find you work, since they already made their money by selling
you a modeling portfolio.
NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM A MODELING AGENCY, and NEVER BUY ANY SERVICES FROM ANYONE,
OR ANY PHOTOGRAPHER, WHO THEY REFER YOU TO. It is the only way that you can
guarantee that they will only make money by finding you modeling jobs.
Go to the source for what you need. Invest in your modeling portfolio from a
professional modeling portfolio photographer or photography company who is not
affiliated with any modeling agencies. That’s what a modeling portfolio
photographer is in business to do. Agencies will not be able to give your better
services, or guidance, because they are only in business to find jobs for the
models who they work for.
4. Unless you are going
for a modeling career in a limited modeling market, stay away from provocative
pictures in your portfolio. A modeling portfolio should make you as marketable
as possible! Never invest in a modeling portfolio from a photographer who insists
that you need to look sexy, that you have to pose in provocative poses, that
you need to pose in skimpy bikinis, or that you need to take your clothes off
in order to model. Pictures which are controversial, or which undermine your
marketability in the mainstream modeling market, have no business being in your
modeling portfolio, unless you are building a portfolio for the more limited
glamour or nude modeling market. Glamour, provocative, and nude modeling is
not for beginners, is high-risk work, and it takes years of professional experience
to negotiate such markets. Additionally, once a picture is taken, it is forever.
You can’t take it back, or control how it will be used.
A good rule of thumb for any modeling portfolio is to only obtain pictures which
you would not hesitate to show to your parents, your family, or children. If
you have reservations, it is too risky to use in your modeling portfolio, and
could even cost you work!
If any photographer insists that these types of pictures are needed for your
modeling portfolio, walk away and find another photographer. They don’t
know what they are doing, regardless of how good their work may look, and will
harm your modeling career more than help it.
5. Teen modeling web sites
are not recommended for any models, and are no way to obtain a modeling portfolio.
Underage, teen girls have no business posing in provocative poses, in skimpy
bikinis, or in lingerie. A professional modeling portfolio is an investment,
and you will never be able to build one while getting paid. Teen modeling web
sites exploit underage girls, in our opinion, and are used for purposes other
than legitimate modeling. Stay away from any photographer who is affiliated
with teen modeling web sites, any photographer who offers to take pictures of
you and publishes your pictures on web sites that you get paid from, or any
photographer who offers to pay you while they build your portfolio (this is
especially true if you are a young girl).
Additionally, see the above tip about high-risk pictures in modeling portfolios.
6. Six Looks are what you
will need to start out your portfolio. You will need at least five looks for
a standard composite card. Modeling is a visual form of marketing, and for the
professional model, the way that they look can represent the “character”,
or role in a modeling jobs. The best, and most marketable models, are almost
chameleon-like in the different ways that they can look; they can pull off a
wide range of looks. The more range of looks that can be achieved, with the
help of makeup artists, haor stylists, and fashion consultants, of course, the
more marketable the model is.
A good modeling portfolio shows a diverse number of different looks that the
model can achieve. The more diverse the demonstrated looks, the more chance
that the model has to convince an art director or modeling jobs that they have
the look that is needed to represent their company, product, service, advertising
concept, or marketing campaign. The model will book the job as a result.
7. Composite cards are a
lot like the business card of a model. They are usually 5 X 7 inches, have pictures
on both sides, and have the name and the stats of the model printed on them.
The usual modeling composite card has five looks from the portfolio of the model
printed on it, and these looks are relevant for the modeling market that the
composite card is optimized for. Some models have a variety of different composite
cards, and target market them for different modeling markets.
Composite cards are mailed out to modeling jobs in an effort to help the model
land a go-see, also known as an audition. During the go-see, the model is interviewed
by the art director or the professional who is in charge of securing models
for the job, and the full modeling portfolio of the model is then reviewed as
the model is considered for the job.
Tampa Modeling Portfolios
Welcome to Tampa modeling
portfolios, a specialty modeling career services site by Aurora PhotoArts Tampa
Photography and Design. Led by Aurora PhotoArts lead photographer C. A. Passinault,
who is also a modeling and talent expert, as well as a casting director, this
modeling portfolio services web site was created to promote the services that
Aurora PhotoArts has long been famous for: proving the absolute best value in
the Tampa Bay photography and design services market for models who are in the
market for an effective modeling portfolio, composite cards (also called zed
cards), and other tools that they have to have for their professional modeling
careers.
There is no way around it. If you want a career as a professional model, you
have to have a professional modeling portfolio to market your looks to prospective
modeling jobs. There are no shortcuts, either. If you look for the lowest priced
portfolio photography services, you will end up with a modeling portfolio which
is not effective, and will not be able to compete against professional models
who have invested in effective modeling portfolios and composite cards.
